Practical tips
New rules for retention - DIN 1986-100
BALCONY REFURBISHMENT
74 defective balconies refurbished - with a new, hard-wearing floor and long-term functional drainage across all storeys: GAG has now realised this project in Cologne-Zollstock. The old drainage through the load-bearing hollow post now serves as emergency drainage; with the LORO System GF the main drainage is now handled by an efficient, durable direct drainage system in DN 50.
New building with concealed drainage: Downpipe with cascade drainage
Less drainage means more safety for the underground drain
Retention roofs also need to be equipped with main and emergency drainage
Retention roof: Heavy precipitation is occurring more and more frequently, even threatening to overload the sewer system. To reduce this risk, maximum quantities that may be discharged apply to many roofs. If precipitation exceeds this quantity, rainwater drainage must be limited to this level - the principle of retention applies.
Flat roof drainage - Industrial hall Einbeck
Around 9,000 square meters of flat roof, efficiently and safely equipped with main and emergency drainage: This has now been realized by Daume GmbH from Duderstadt for a new building of the seed specialist KWS in Einbeck. The professional craftsmen worked closely with the manufacturer LORO, who ensured an economical and legally compliant installation of the pipes with the standard-compliant design of the entire drainage system.
EDGE East Side Tower: 45 floors drained in cascade
A building height of 140 meters poses special challenges for drainage. In the case of the EDGE East Side Tower in Berlin, the new landmark of Berlin-Friedrichshain, the staggered projections add to this.
Calculations for the harmless drainage of precipitation are mandatory for every building. For the EDGE East Side Tower, in addition to complicated calculations, special solutions and custom-made drains had to be designed. This was also a special project for the flat roof specialists of the Leibeling roofing company from Berlin.
2024 Double safety for flat roof and balcony drainage
Downpipes with high-safety overflow: The high-quality steel downpipes are visually impressive: they structure the building and contribute to its sophisticated architecture - and the balconies can be elegantly connected to the downpipe. To be on the safe side even in extreme precipitation, the downpipes are also equipped with the LORO-X HSÜ. The high-safety overflow prevents backwater into the drainage pipe when the sewer system can no longer absorb any water. The system then drains onto the surface.
2024 Conversion for hotel, boarding house and apartments
The new Kurpark Quarter in Bad Gandersheim, formerly "Hotel Bartels", central building at the spa park directly on the grounds of the State Garden Show, now combines hotel, boarding house and modern apartments after comprehensive renovation. The entire project has been planned and executed to a high standard. This includes the flat roof and balcony drainage, which is technically first-class and also aesthetically convincing. Like many small towns, Bad Gandersheim in the southern Harz is fighting to hold its own against the larger centres and to remain attractive as a location. Local investors have now taken an important step in this direction here.
2023 High-bay warehouse: 96 drains, 8 lines
When renovating a high-bay warehouse, those responsible opted for siphonic drainage. Here, the internal pipes are laid without a gradient, as the water is discharged with negative pressure. Insulation protects against condensation.

2022 In one line
Solingen is creating attractive new living space. A technically and aesthetically convincing detail of the complex is the roof drainage with systems that drain in a cascading manner with just one line even across stepped storeys.
“Curious: the trades came from a single source - the buyers, of course, did not. As a result, there were no fewer than ten experts on this construction site alone who checked the drainage concept - and there was not a single complaint.”

LORO-X cascade drainage for residential buildings with roof terraces
62 new residential buildings, solid and modern, with flat roofs and roof terraces, staggered floors and balconies: Solingen is creating attractive new living space.
A technically and aesthetically convincing detail of the complex is the roof drainage, which drains in a cascading manner with just one line even across stepped storeys. In this way, the high-quality steel pipes blend harmoniously into the sophisticated architecture - implemented with exemplary craftsmanship by the guild-certified specialist company Gernert Dachtechnik from Waldbröl.

2021/22 LORO-X composite pipes defy flow noise and condensation
Technical description
LORO has developed special composite pipes for internal roof drainage. The »LORO-X« composite pipes combine sound insulation and thermal insulation by reducing loud flow noise and preventing condensation on the pipe.

2021 Apartment building with cascade drainage
Project report
Roof terraces arranged in a cascade required a far-sighted drainage solution for an apartment building in Bad Honnef: despite the staggered arrangement, the downpipes were to blend harmoniously with the architecture.
The independent flow paths for main and emergency drainage naturally also had to be maintained. The planners opted for the LORO-X-DUOSTREAM cascade drainage system - it works with just one line each for main and emergency drainage across all storeys.

2020 The right drain for every balcony
Application technology
The safe drainage of balconies, terraces, loggias and arcades is increasingly becoming the focus of planners and installers.
The extensive range of LORO-X balcony drains made of hot-dip galvanised steel, in combination with LORO-X steel drain pipes and fittings, helps to find a precisely fitting drainage solution for every balcony build-up.
2019 LORO-X cascade drainage reduces the number of downpipes
Technical description
With the external drainage of cascades and stepped storeys, the number of downpipes for main and emergency drainage increases with every storey.
Since, according to the standard, drainage onto lower storeys is only permitted in exceptional cases, each downpipe usually has to be routed across all lower storeys down to the outlet.
With the new LORO-X DUOSTREAM cascade drainage, the number of downpipes is significantly reduced.
2018 LORO-X retention roof drainage
Strong retention needs strong emergency drainage
Due to increasing discharge restrictions into the underground drain, rainwater retention is becoming more important.
If there is no space for a retention basin or for infiltration into the natural soil, the rainwater is retained on the roof in a controlled manner by special retention drains with a throttle pipe.
2017 Drainage of setback storeys and cascades
Multi-floor drains
Modern residential and commercial buildings often feature a setback storey or even several cascading roof terraces.
It should be noted that each level is drained with at least one main drainage into the underground drain and one emergency drainage into the open.
2017 LORO-X stepped storey drainage
Trend towards stepped storeys
Trend towards stepped storeys:
Modern residential construction shows a trend towards living in the city with the feeling of living “in green surroundings”.
This includes at least a balcony or a loggia, but preferably a larger roof terrace.
The densification of urban living space by “adding storeys” – as a stepped storey on existing buildings – is also becoming increasingly important.
Especially in large cities.
2015 Special case boundary development
LORO-X emergency drains for gutters
Roof drainage > Rain events above the design rain are to be expected as planned.
With hung gutters, overflow usually occurs harmlessly over the front edge of the gutter into the open.
However, there are cases in which an overflow during heavy rain is undesirable or not permitted.
2015 LORO-X parapet drainage systems
LORO-X ATTIKA-DIREKT
Special requirements:
In residential and office buildings, the focus is not on high discharge capacity, but on the lowest possible noise development of the drainage.
On used roof areas, such as terraces or accessible flat roofs, space-saving drains that adapt optimally to any gravel layers and slab coverings are particularly important.
In order to make optimal use of the interior of the building, external pipelines are often preferred.
2014 Flat roof drainage: high and reliable performance only with a complete system
Parapet and flat roof drainage systems must become ever more powerful due to heavier rainfall events and more frequent “once-in-a-century rains”.
However, the advertised “high discharge capacity” of parapet and roof drains is not always achieved in practice.
In order to achieve the required discharge capacity, the system configuration from the drain to the outlet as well as the necessary water level on the roof must be taken into account.
2013 Double benefit: a combined drainage solution
DRAINAGE > In residential and commercial construction, space-saving solutions for roof drainage are an advantage. Combined drainage systems that unite main and emergency drainage save material and installation time. Core drilling can also be reduced to a minimum in this way.
Due to the deliberately high proportion of water in the pipe system, the intake of air is controlled, so that the discharge capacity can be significantly improved at a low water level on the roof.
2012 Optimized drainage
from 14 to 2
DRAINAGE > For flat roofs, roof drainage is particularly related to the insulation gradient plan on the roof. Optimal planning made it possible that in future only 2 special drains instead of the planned 14 will be used on the Theresienschule in Berlin-Weißensee.
2011 Flat drained
2010 Emergency drain to the outside
DRAINAGE > Most parapet drains available on the market only achieve the minimum discharge in conjunction with the intended downpipe.
Spout solutions without a downpipe should also achieve the minimum discharge values of the standard.
The performance is to be demonstrated using three different examples.
2009 High drainage to low points
2009 Draining with pressure (LORO quick drainage system)
"Large roofs can be drained according to two principles: the gravity and the siphonic drainage system.
For gravity drainage according to DIN 1986-100, a maximum filling level of 0.7 (h/d = 0.7) is required for the necessary ventilation of the rainwater drainage system.
With siphonic drainage, on the other hand, a filling level of 1.0 is aimed for. This requirement is met by using specially developed roof and gutter drains which prevent air from entering thanks to a hood closed at the top."
2009 High-performance parapet drainage systems from a single source
The drainage of flat roofs – especially those used commercially – is usually realized with an internal roof drainage system in which the roof drain is connected to an internal pipe system via a penetration through the roof.
External drainage with a half-round gutter, as known from pitched roofs, has not previously been easily possible for flat roofs.
2008 Parapet drainage systems with siphonic flow
In roof drainage, the trend - driven by increasingly intense heavy rainfall events – is towards high-quality and safe complete systems.
The innovative parapet roof drainage systems with siphonic flow from a single source by LORO are becoming increasingly popular.
2008 The solar house of TU Darmstadt
The university wins the top competition in Washington for the most attractive and energy-efficient solar house.
"For the later drainage, which had to be separate for each house module for reasons of design and transport of the house, the inlets and emergency inlets from LORO were fitted and fixed at the penetration points both in the flat area and in the parapet areas."
2007 Even a once-in-a-century rain is no structural problem
In Landsberg near Halle/Saale stands one of the most modern distribution centers. It was built by the drugstore chain Rossmann. The central warehouse primarily serves Central Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. At a height of 36 m, it operates almost fully automatically. Highly impressive technology and logistics.
To ensure that the flow of goods does not come to a standstill due to a deluge from the flat roofs, even in a once-in-a-century rain, the client and architect opted for the high-performance siphonic drainage for the lightweight construction totaling 23,000 m2.
2007 Innovation award
"The special highlight: the visually disturbing drainage technology on the building is eliminated, the rainwater is discharged directly - inside the columns - into the underground sewer system. Hidden in the column cavity is a sound-insulated drainage pipe (type LORO-X steel discharge pipes, LOROWERK K.H.Vahlbrauk GmbH & Co.KG/ Bad Gandersheim), which drains the roof water downwards, as well as a trace heating system (also LOROWERK) so that the water does not freeze at sub-zero temperatures. Due to the high concrete density, the columns provide additional sound insulation against rainwater flowing down." (Source: www.europoles.com)
