Cutting to Length
Cutting LORO-X steel drain pipes and drain pipes to length
Pipes and drains are best cut to length using a pipe cutter with 3 or 4 sharp cutting wheels without guide rollers. Burrs on sawn pipes must be removed. The zinc layer provides cathodic protection at the cut surfaces and prevents under-rusting.
Post-treatment of the cut surfaces is not required.
Cathodic Protection
A look at the electrochemical series of metals shows that zinc is the less noble metal compared to iron and thus goes into solution when conductively connected to iron in the presence of an electrolyte — which is always present in wastewater pipes — i.e., it behaves anodically.
Zinc can therefore be described as a sacrificial metal in such a connection. This means for a galvanized pipe that the surrounding zinc "sacrifices" itself at the cut surfaces and thus protects the steel. This effect is called cathodic protection.
The cathodic protective effect of a zinc layer on steel works not only at the contact point but also at a distance of up to 2 mm (remote effect).
Post-treatment of the cut surfaces is therefore not required.
Tapered Pipe End
When cutting LORO-X pipes with a pipe cutter, the pipe end is simultaneously tapered, which facilitates pipe installation and prevents damage to sealing elements.
